The ethanol or biodiesel is produced from biomass such as vegetable oil, cornmeal, and sugar cane. Ethanol, also known as bio-diesel, is made from sugar cane by first extracting the oil from the fruit. This is then refined into ethanol, which is stored in tanks to be used as a vehicle fuel. This process makes it possible to convert sugar cane into diesel fuel. There are currently around 4 million barrels of ethanol in the United States alone, which can be used to produce biodiesel. However, it is very expensive, with prices ranging between ten cents per gallon and seventy dollars for one gallon.
What is distilled biodiesel, and what are its benefits?
There are two major advantages to converting renewable resources into ethanol: the ability to reduce dependence on foreign oil and the opportunity to lower fuel prices. By using biofuels instead of gasoline, Americans are able to reduce their dependence on foreign oil which will save them on many forms of taxation, including gasoline tax and federal excise tax.
In addition to being a cheaper fuel, ethanol reduces our reliance on foreign oil because it is derived from an organic substance which is naturally occurring and therefore does not cause pollution when burning. On top of this, ethanol reduces the amount of harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone that are produced when using gasoline, especially in small cars and trucks.
